Well so far, it makes perfect sense for SixApart to go with the product of his ex-President of Europe Operations. Loic Le Meur is not a successful entrepreneur, he is a powerful businessman. He is a close friend to the Techcrunch family, whose leader has some shares in Seesmic.
Actually, all the top-guns of the Valley have shares in Le Meur's company: Jeff Clavier (Imeem, Loomia, Kaboodle), Michael Arrington (Omnidrive, Dancejam), Ron Conway (Pownce, Twitter, Loomia), Dan Gillmor (Dopplr, Fon), Reid Hoffman (Dopplr, Digg, Lookery), Ariel Poler (Slideshare, Wegame, Xobni), Martin Varsavsky (23andMe, Joost, Tumblr) and many more.
Loic Le Meur keeps repeating that they are not concerned about a business model yet (no later than yesterday). I don't believe that Seesmic is an online video company. Seesmic is set to become the leading provider of what we call today micro-blogging solutions.
loiclemeur I have to admit I feel less and less the need of a blog with Twitter and Seesmic (Posted on Twitter 3/11/9)For sure. Think about it:
It's in the air that blogs generate discussions, but the discussion may happen elsewhere online, creating a feeling of distress among writers. The challenge nowadays is not to have the kick ass site anymore. It's all about the kick ass distribution and platform integration.
Distribution through Thwirl, the perfect Air product that made Twitter so easy to use. Seesmic bought itself about 500,000 users (including me) when it acquired Thwirl. And mostly it bought itself a desktop portal for users to jump straight into Seesmic.
Integration in all possible social platforms, like Wordpress last month, and Sixapart's blogging platforms now. Integration is a real estate game, like domain names were a decade ago. Since the web is a shattered media environment, how do you settle everywhere? The way Disqus does, by offering a remote comment platform integrated in blogs.
Become the leading distributed discussion platform, that's what Seesmic is after. The Racoon still has to cross the chiasm before claiming victory.
