A young hacker was able to crack the iPhone to allow other carriers to be used on the new tech toy.
Now while this is a relief since the Apple/AT&T deal was obviously distorted, it's also a great move towards another matter that the FCC is dealing with right now: Making the 700 Mghz broadband spectrum free.
The army of early adopters that bought the iPhone is also a trendsetter force. Apple's strategy on the iPhone 1.0 was obviously to let this group of consumers play around with the toy, and let them develop all the killer apps they wanna have on their phone. iPhone users are a sort of powerful consumer group.
I can't wait to see how many people are going to hack their iPhone to go beyond what Steve Jobs wants. The blog on which the hack was released is going through a buzz (check alexa for approximate graph) and the word should be out worldwide by the end of the day.
So if we find out that a good load of iPhone consumers wish to chose their carriers by hacking it, and since the iPhone users represent such a strong consumer group (with a lobbying power), then Kevin Martin should review his decision and let Google get a bit more of what it wants from the 700 Mghz spectrum.
